I have always been interested in creating images. Even as a child I remember making paintings and really wanting to become an artist. Thirty years on and I may have achieved that goal.
I was born in London in 1971. I graduated in 1993 with a first class Honours degree in Visual Arts from De Montfort University, Leicester and from there I went on to study a Post-Graduate Degree at the Royal Academy School of Art, London. After my Post-Graduate in 1997 I was invited to attend a reception by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace to recognise the achievements of young adults from throughout the United Kingdom who have excelled in their particular field which pretty much launched my professional career as a professional artist.
I love the city and everything about it! When I moved to London I was overwhelmed by the scale and diversity of the architecture in London with it’s fascinating mixture of contemporary and traditional buildings and places - it wasn’t long before this became an ongoing theme in my work. This is echoed in my approach towards painting and digital work.
Digital work is increasingly becoming more important to my creative output. It’s very liberating to be able to compose and fine tune an image, to be able to adjust the dynamics of colour and perspective on the fly, without waiting for paint to dry. This has increased my productivity profically as it I can create then keep or discard ideas very quickly - sometimes these images look like a place in real world other times they’re a combination of many cities and buildings which are thrown into the visual mix just to see what happens.
In my recent paintings and digital work I am searching for a quiet place in the city, away form the hustle and bustle, a place unexpected and hidden from view . The air of the city is always there but the spaces are empty with complex structures temporarily devoid of human presence - a post apocalyptic vision? or a maybe it’s just a public holiday. |
