March Poster Release includes New Florals from Elizabeth Horning and OM

(March 28, 2006) Seattle, WA – Grand Image, Ltd., A Larry Winn Company, is pleased to announce the release of new floral imagery from Elizabeth Horning and OM included in the March release of their Poster Collection, available through Bentley Publishing Group.

Those who love the splendor of flowers and the glories of the pageant of life, appreciate the artwork of long time Grand Image artist Elizabeth Horning. She possesses a rare ability to flawlessly communicate with paint on canvas and paper the joy she receives from flowers; she does not merely copy the beauty of nature, but magnifies it. Ms. Horning also has new landscapes available in the April release.

OM, a newly signed artist, is a contemporary Minimalist artist who unites Western and Eastern culture and values. Drawing on his love of nature and spirituality, he makes meditative paintings that are both authentic and profound, both uplifting and healing. In speaking about his artwork, the artist says, "My artistic works fuse the rich tradition of European classical painting with Oriental simplicity, resulting in a timeless quietude reminiscent of Zen meditation. They are paintings for the mind as much as for the eye, mappings of mystical territories into which I offer peaceful experiences of the infinity and richness of nature."

Elizabeth Horning and OM are published by Grand Image, Ltd, and their posters are available through Bentley Publishing Group, call 800-227-1666, or visit www.grandimageposters.com. Grand Image is largely known for its contemporary, high-end imagery. For more information, call 206-624-0444 or visit www.grandimage.com.

New Poster Release includes Eight New Abstracts
from Three Newly Signed Grand Image Artists

(March 28, 2006) Seattle, WA – Grand Image, Ltd., A Larry Winn Company, is pleased to announce the signing of three new artists, Ed Kranick, Adele Sypesteyn, and Jenny Nelson. Eight new abstracts from these artists will be included in the upcoming release of their Poster Collection, available through Bentley Publishing Group.

Although Ed Kranick received a degree in architecture, he manages to spend his time equally on art making and working on projects like the award winning newly opened Seattle Public Library. He regards his latest works Trussed and Locks as, "… paintings that are primarily spatial and chromatic explorations. There is an oscillation between two and three dimensions, a juxtaposition of pattern and field, and ambiguity of viewpoint."

In her three new releases, Magnitude, Transitory, and Brief B, Adele Sypesteyn uses mixed media to add a complex and ethereal touch to her works. She muses, "My paintings evoke the slow, accumulated and interactive effects of weather, erosion and the visual marks of generations of peoples' lives playing themselves out on a wall."

Jenny Nelson applies intricate layers of pigments and form to construct a delicate balance in her new works Orange Edee, Walk About 1, and Walk About 2. She says, "I find myself in lively conversations with the canvas, focusing on the intersection of shapes and the relationship between colors. This layering effect allows surprises and accidents to occur."

Ed Kranick, Adele Sypesteyn, and Jenny Nelson are published by Grand Image, Ltd, and their posters are available through Bentley Publishing Group, call 800-227-1666, or visit www.grandimageposters.com. Grand Image is largely known for its contemporary, high-end imagery.

Obituary: Lisel Salzer, 99, Seattle artist who fled Nazis

Grand Image is sad to report the passing of one of our longtime and well respected artists, Lisel Salzer. Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her friends and colleagues.

For some artists, acclaim only arrives after their lives have ended. But Lisel Salzer — a native of Austria who fled the Nazis and settled in Seattle — was one of the lucky ones: She was rediscovered at the age of 96 and honored with a museum exhibition in her native country. Then, two years ago, the Austrian government presented Ms. Salzer with the prestigious "Cross of Merit in Gold" for her lifetime devotion and contribution to the arts.

Ms. Salzer died Dec. 6 at her home in Seattle's Mount Baker neighborhood, some nine months short of her 100th birthday. Ms. Salzer and her husband Dr. Frederick Grossman moved to Seattle from New York in 1950.

Ms. Salzer worked as a portrait artist and enamelist, showing for a time at the Otto Seligman Gallery. Among her subjects were artists James Washington Jr., George Tsutakawa and Alfredo Arreguin. During the 1970s and '80s, the Frye Art Museum mounted several solo exhibitions of her paintings and enamels.

Grossman died in 1957, and Ms. Salzer, whose parents died at the Theresiendstadt concentration camp, never remarried. Ms. Salzer had no children: Her friends and former art students became her surrogate family.

As a young woman, Ms. Salzer led a privileged life. After she finished art school, her parents sent her on a three-month painting holiday in Paris, and at 23 she set up her own studio in Vienna, not far from her parents' home.

Her paintings were accepted in the region's top juried exhibition and she was invited to show at the Wüthle Gallery, which also represented Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.

Ms. Salzer spent summers with her parents near Salzburg, along the shore of the Wolfgangsee. There she joined an artist colony at the village of Zinkenbach that included her former instructor Ferdinand Kitt and another painter she admired, Josef Dobrowsky.

"This group were the most famous painters in Austria from 1925 until 1938," Austrian art historian Christina Steinmetzer told The Times in 2002. Steinmetzer's research on the group had led her to Seattle and Ms. Salzer, then the only surviving member of the colony.

Steinmetzer and several other historians founded a museum to pay homage to that special group, dispersed by the Nazis. Some, like Ms. Salzer, were Jewish. Others were considered dangerous simply because they were artists and worked together. "I call them 'the lost generation' because most of them had to emigrate," Steinmetzer said.

In Seattle, Ms. Salzer was very involved with the Democratic Party. "Politics is what kept her alive the last few years," said writer Barbara Sleeper, who assisted Ms. Salzer with her autobiography. "She was hoping to stay alive to see Bush go out of office."

With her vision greatly diminished, Ms. Salzer had struggled as an artist during her final years. "She was depressed, because it's a horrible thing for a visual artist to not be able to see," said friend Lenore Kobayashi.

But even with her eyesight fading, Ms.Salzer continued to draw and delighted in sending little cartoons to friends and acquaintances. A number of her cartoons are still being published in the Canadian magazine Walrus.

A private memorial will be held. In lieu of flowers, please volunteer or send contributions to the Community Services for the Blind or Partially Sighted, 9709 Third Ave. N.E., No. 100, Seattle, WA 98115-2027.

According to Larry Winn, CEO of Grand Image, Ltd., "I have been a great admirer of The Art Group collection for many years. We are very excited to offer their artwork to our customers and galleries in the States."

Grand Image, Ltd. Releases Two Posters From Newly Signed Artist Dominic Pangborn

(August 30, 2005) Seattle, WA – Grand Image, Ltd., A Larry Winn Company, has released two posters, from newly signed artist Dominic Pangborn, Sky Poppies I and Sky Poppies II. This is the first of a group of new posters and limited editions to be released by Grand Image, Ltd of Pangborn's work.

Dominic Pangborn's past as an adopted child from South Korea is one that has innately, if not subconsciously, revealed itself in his bold, colorful art. His father was an American solider, fighting the war in Korea, who left without knowing he would have a half-Korean son. Family circumstances led him to be adopted by an Irish-English-Dutch family from the Midwest with 11 other children. In high school he discovered creating art, especially abstract art, came to him easily and he eventually earned a full scholarship to the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts.

While a freshman in college, comments from a chance encounter with a stranger in an elevator caused him to reflect on his outlook on life. That woman spurred a sense of decisiveness in Pangborn to produce not only what he sees and feels, but also what makes him and others happy. His individuality can be seen in the bursts of bold reds and yellows and blues that swirl and pop in spirals, spheres, and flowers.

Dominic Pangborn's artwork is published by Grand Image, Ltd and available through Bentley Publishing Group, call 800-227-1666, or visit www.grandimageposters.com. Grand Image is largely known for its contemporary, high-end imagery. For more information, call 206-624-0444 or visit www.grandimage.com.

Grand Image Artist Soraya Chemaly Featured in Washington Post

(August 30, 2005) Seattle, WA – The Washington Post recently featured Grand Image artist Soraya Chemaly on the cover of the Arts & Living section. The self-described Type-A planning consultant and mother of three young girls, turned to painting two years ago at her doctors suggestion as a way to cope with her kid-induced sleep deprivation and physical stress. She revived her teenage hobby of painting with exuberance, even though she could only paint for 30 minutes a day.

Today, Chemaly works 'compulsively' on the large canvases she has affixed to the walls of her home office. Her portfolio consists of bold and vivid graphic florals on equally bright backgrounds. Grand Image has released eight posters featuring the works of Soraya Chemaly including Brilliance, which has also been featured on the cover of Ballard Designs, the Atlanta-based home decor catalog.

Soraya Chemaly's artwork is published by Grand Image, Ltd and available through Bentley Publishing Group, call 800-227-1666, or visit www.grandimageposters.com. The supplement showcases 31 new landscapes rendered in a wide variety of styles including classic European vistas from Max Hayslette, and delicate rural landscapes from Thomas William Jones. Ethereal Mid-west landscapes from Thea Schrack, and American mountains and rivers with contrasting dark and intense colors schemes from Donna Young. With so many new works to choose from, there is certainly a landscape to please even the most discerning collector.

The most prolific body of work in the supplement comes from artist Maeve Harris with 11 new luminescent landscapes, abstracts, and architecture.
