Q - What is POD?
A - POD is an acronym for Prints on Demand. It is a process that allows for an image to be printed as a fine art reproduction, as it is ordered and to the size requested.
Q - Can I determine the size of the print?
A - Absolutely. We have a schedule of multiple sizes, but if a standard size does not work, we can produce a "one off" to your specific requested size, for a slight up charge.
Q - What substrates are the images printed on?
A - At this time we are offering all the images on fine art paper and a majority on studio canvas.
Q - What about the quality of these prints?
A - Massive leaps in digital printing technology combined with highly sophisticated printers have allowed for the creation of fine art prints that will meet any gallery or artist's approval. The best of archival inks, fine art paper and studio canvas are utilized. Most important, it comes with our quality guarantee.
Q - Are these open editions or limited editions?
A - The answer is both. We have a substantial limited edition line. These images carry an edition size of 375, and are offered in multiple sizes. Whatever the size printed, including "one offs", each print is considered part of the edition and maintains the integrity of the print run.
A portfolio of images in our Open Edition line is also offered in a variety of sizes and is meant to meet the most stringent budgets, thus the price points are lower than the limited editions. Fine art paper is still employed, but the weight is lighter than the limited editions, and of course they are not produced in limited form. The printing quality is first rate.
Q - Are the prints signed and numbered by the artist?
A - In order to stay flexible and price point conscious, the artwork is "plate" signed in the image with the artist's signature, eliminating many time consuming steps in the distribution channel. Because we limit the edition to just 375, the artwork has the rarity of a regular edition.
Additionally, artwork in the POD Collection is plate signed with "Ed/375". Unlike the business model of the past when serigraphs were hand pulled, signed and numbered by the artist at the time of printing, we often print several different sizes of one image, so the sequence of the edition per that specific artwork cannot be determined, but the edition size is closely monitored.
The exact technology that makes pricing and sizing so flexible also means that the production of the artwork must be flexible and that the order in which the art leaves the press/printer and what number that is in the edition is not always exact. We choose to keep diligent records on where we start with the entire edition and not to violate that.
Q - What does your certification process entail?
A - Each limited edition print is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity that is Hand Signed by the Artist, but not specifically numbered. Their signature on the certificate not only indicates the artist has approved our reproduction quality, but also our certification process, which has historical precedent dating back to the time of Durer and Rembrandt, where their etchings were never numbered and rarely ever signed. Many 20th Century master prints from artists such as Picasso, Miro and Matisse were created with a signed in the plate signature and usually a document or frontus piece (if a suite of images) indicating the edition size. All of the prints sell regularly at Sotheby's. While we are not professing these are auction prints, we are asserting our strong belief in maintaining integrity of the authentication and printing of these editions.
Q - Can I commission an exclusive, custom edition of an image?
A - Absolutely. And if we don't have the perfect image for you, we will commission an artist to create an image for your specific need.
Q - Regarding pricing, how do POD prints compare to other prints in the marketplace?
A - Pricing is important. The three key elements we know our customers must have are: gallery quality, flexibility in size, and excellent pricing. It is not necessarily our mission to be the lowest priced publisher in the POD arena, but to have the combination of a great image and a great price compelling enough to meet the needs of our customer. We work hard on communicating those needs to our artists, printers, and other vendors in order to provide the best price possible while still delivering a great product to our customer. We have not only met that goal, but are delighted to see that our prices are in many cases much lower than our competition.
